Waqar Younis recalled the World Cup 1996, saying - 'We were surprised by the behavior of Aamir Sohail'
Lahore: Former Pakistan fast bowler Waqar Younis said that he and his team batsman were surprised by the behavior of Aamir Sohail during the match when the World Cup was going on between India and Pakistan in 1996. India won this quarter-final match in Bengaluru by 39 runs. In this match, Aamir Sohail was captaining the Pak team. Pakistan had to score 288 runs to win. And there was a time when the visiting team was in a very strong position.
Chasing the target, the Pakistan team scored 109 runs after losing 1 wicket in the 15th over. Then Aamer Sohail hit Venkatesh Prasad's ball towards cover point. Aamir pointed to Boundary with a bat, teasing Prasad. Perhaps Aamir is saying that he will put the same boundary again, but on the very next ball, Prasad made him clean bold by uprooting the off stump behind Aamir.
Reacting to this incident, Waqar Younis has said that, 'To be honest, we were shocked by the way he (Aamir Sohail) was behaving, he was hitting the ball in every corner of the field. Then what did they need to do? I think he was under pressure.
Waqar further said that "He was batting well, looked better." I think he scored 55 runs in fewer balls (55 runs in 46 balls) and Saeed Anwar was also playing well. We lost our first wicket when we were around 85 runs in 10 overs (84 runs). As we were moving towards the goal, we lost the wicket of Saeed Anwar and then Aamir went to Sohail, the matter got messed up. Then Inzamam-ul-Haq and Ejaz Ahmed also soon returned to the pavilion.
Waqar said, 'The entire credit for the victory goes to Anil Kumble and Prasad, their bowling put the Pakistan team players under pressure, and we lost the wickets of Inzamam and Ejaz in the next few overs, very difficult at that time. She had arrived. We made many mistakes in that match, Javed Miandad was also playing in that match, he should have been sent to bat at No. 4, but we kept him at No. 6, there was no use to do that because he was at the last stage of his career, well it was a good match, and Team India was a complete contender.
